What is Mumps?
Mumps is an illness caused by a virus (Paramyxovirus) from the Rubulavirus family. It mainly affects the parotid salivary glands, causing pain, swelling, and tenderness in the cheek and jaw area.
Symptoms:
- Swelling of the parotid glands (cheek and jaw)
- Fever, muscle pain, loss of appetite, malaise, and headache may precede swelling
- Swelling usually peaks in 1 to 3 days and lasts around 5 days
Transmission:
- Spreads through direct contact with infected saliva or respiratory droplets
- Infectious period is 2 days before to 5 days after swelling starts
- Avoid contact with others during illness to prevent spread
Complications:
- Orchitis (testicular inflammation) can occur, especially in males
- Other complications include oophoritis, mastitis, meningitis, encephalitis, pancreatitis, and hearing loss
- Complications are less frequent in vaccinated individuals
Vaccination:
- Best way to prevent mumps and its complications
- Two doses of MMR vaccine are 88% effective; one dose is 78% effective
- In outbreaks, a third dose may be recommended for high-risk groups
Mumps in Vaccinated People:
- Vaccinated individuals can still get mumps but usually have milder symptoms
- Effectiveness of the vaccine is assessed by comparing cases in vaccinated and unvaccinated people
Diagnosis:
- Confirmed through RT-PCR, viral culture, or IgM serology
- A negative test result doesn't rule out mumps
- All cases should be reported to the health department
