VERTIGO DEFINITION: Vertigo is the feeling that you or your environment is moving or spinning. SYMPTOMS: Dizziness, sense that person and surroundings are moving, loss of balance and unsteadiness, nausea, vomiting CAUSES: Unknown, head injury DIAGNOSIS: • Dizziness by eye and head movements and then decrease inless than one minute • Dizziness with specific eye movements that occur when lie on back with head turned to one side and tipped slightly over the edge of the examination bed • Involuntary movements of eyes from side to side • Inability to control eye movements TEST TO DIAGNOSE: • Electronystagmography (ENG) and videonystagmography (VNG). • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES: • Aware of the possibility of losing balance, which can lead to falling and serious injury. • Sit down immediately when feel dizzy. • Use good lighting if get up at night. PREVENTION: 1. Get physical therapy. Exercises that promote better hand-eye coordination, stronger joints and muscles, and overall improved fitness and balance. 3. Sleep on your back. 4. Elevate your head. 5. Wedge pillows are recommended for vertigo sufferers because they’re designed to elevate the head slightly. 6. Travel pillows can also be helpful for vertigo sufferers as they retrain to a new position. 7. Wake up slowly. 8. Move slowly as you get out of bed, allowing your inner ear to adjust to the new head position. 9. Avoid walking in the dark, as you’re even more prone to injury if vertigo strikes. Turn on light to illuminate way, but use a lower wattage so it’s not too bright to wake you back up. 10. Minimize stress.
